To obtain a security guard license, commonly called a "guard card," in Arizona, you must meet specific requirements set by the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS). The process varies slightly depending on whether you aim to become an unarmed or armed security guard.
Unarmed Security Guard Requirements:
1. Age and Citizenship: You must be at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen or legal resident authorized to seek employment in the United States.
2. Criminal Background: You should have no felony convictions or pending indictments. Additionally, within the five years preceding your application, you must not have been convicted of misdemeanors involving personal violence, misconduct with a deadly weapon, dishonesty, fraud, arson, theft, domestic violence, narcotics offenses, or sexual misconduct.
3. Training: Complete an 8-hour unarmed security guard training course from a state-certified facility. This training covers criminal law, arrest laws, uniform and grooming standards, communication, use of force, general security procedures, ethics, crime scene preservation, and emergency response procedures.
4. Application Process:
Fingerprinting: Submit a fingerprint card (Form FD-258) for a background check.
Photographs: Provide two passport-sized color photographs of your face.
Identification: Include a copy of your driver's license or another valid form of identification.
Fees: Pay a processing fee of $72, which includes a $50 application fee and a $22 fingerprint fee.
Submit the completed application and all required documents and fees to the AZDPS Licensing Unit. Processing times may vary, but applications without complications are typically processed within 10 days.
